When I was in university, I worked one summer for a dairy farmer, Mr. Milo Morgan, milking cows. He'd taken a break from his beloved cows, during his years as a bomber pilot in WWII. Although he never told me this, I knew he had an office filled with pictures, medals and memorabilia collected during his time spent in the war. I never got to set foot in his office, and only got a brief glimpse one day at the top of the stairs of the old farmhouse he lived in. One day I asked him to tell me about his experiences in the war. Milo refused.
At the time, I respected his silence. I still do. But I would now like to have the chance to talk to him again about the importance of sharing his experiences. Unfortunately, I never will. Milo died a few years ago.
Why is it so important that veterans share their stories with us, no matter how difficult it is for them?
What does it teach us?
