Page: 38     Paragraph: 1-3

One sentence summary:   In this passage Ms. Veer ( Principal ) is trying to be nice to Ian and trying to tell him that she understood what he was talking about., and the problems that he is facing.

Significants:  This is significant to the text because I think that the Author was trying to tell the reader that Ms. Veer is really nice and the school is to, but they don't know how to figure out Ian's problem's about his drug attict Mom, broke (poor) family, and paying the bills.

PG: 228 Paragraph: 5
Summary: This is when Ian's father "Samuel" helps Ian and argues that he didn't do anything wrong and helps Ian while he is in court.

Significant's: This is significant to the text because I think that the author was trying to gently hint that Ian's dad "Samuel" still loves Ian and cares for him.

Paragraph: 1, and 2.
One Sentence Summary: Ian is explaining to coach how tired they are from running from the cops and they want to come clean. Also, that he doesn't like his mom doing the drugs, but Ian and Sammy don't know what to do.
Significance: The significance of this part of the story is that Ian doesn't like to run away, but he also doesn't like/want how his mom is deep into drugs.

Read Aloud Passage;
Page; 219
Whole Page.
OSS; Samuel told Ian that he was going to take care of his family. He also told Ian that he would get his mom in rehab, and his little brother, Sammy in good hands. Ian would have to go to counsiling, and Sammy would live with Samuel.Ian told Samuel to just worry about Sammy, instead of himself.
S. This shows me that Ian really loves his little brother Sammy more than himself, and his mother. He would rather Sammy be safe instead of himself. The author included this part because it shows, great bondong between Ian and Sammy.

Pg: 200 Prgph: 3-5
Summary: This is when Ian found a hit list his principal used to expell kids at school and Ian decided to phone his coach Shmidt for help.
Significants: This is significant to the text because this is when Ian is basically saying sorry to his old friend and asking her for help. I think the author was trying to tell the reader that it's no use being enemies with people as they can later on help you in life.

Read Aloud;
P. 187
Ian snuck into Malachi's house to get his Mom back. He got her, and she starts crying and asking " what happened". Ian freaked out and said that she has to stop dooing drugs, and drinking alcohol. He said that Sammy needs her, and always has. She said that she will try.
S. This is significant because she wants to change her lifestyle for her childrens sake. Also she wants what is best for Ian and Sammy, and not what she wants.

Pg: 163
I think this passage is significant to the text because even though Ian thought everything was going to be in his favour, everything was going to be the total opposite for Ian and Sammy. Ian was going to go to jail and Sammy would be put into foster care. What's really sad is that Ian's and Sammy's father may have been able to stop all of this, but he didn't want to go back to the life he once lived.

Week 4
Pg;155
P; 8-25
One Sentence; Ian and Sammy are talking about how they both do not like Jail and were wondering if their mother ever went to Jail before.
Significance; This is significant because if you do bad things like drugs, or drink alcohol, or smoke, you are more likely to go to Jail. Ians mom does drugs, drinks alcohol, and I think she smokes too. I predict that she did go to Jail before, considering she does a lot of bad things. The author chose this passage because he wanted you to know that if you do bad things, like drugs or alcohol, you are more likely to go to Jail. He wants you to know that you should not do drugs, because it really messes up your family.

Paragraph: 2. "She sat back....seventh grade"
One Sentence Summary: Coach Schmidt has scores of Ian's "WAEE" to show him all his marks.
Significance: The significance of this paert is that it is showing that Coach really does care about Ian. It is also showing how Ian is doing in school. (Through the years). And how he(Ian) needs to be in school.

Book Club #4
Pg: 158 Paragraph: 1-4
Summary: This paragraph is when Ian's dad Samuel sent Ian away under his guards supervision to Juvie.
Significants: I think that the Author included this in the novel Skate because he wanted to tell the reader that you can't rely on a dad that hasen't been with you since your were a kid. Also I think that the author was trying to tell the reader that if you make a mistake you have to fix it and not someone else. In other words if you make a mistake it's your responsibility to fix it.

Pg:150
P:4
One Sentence Summary: When Ian and Sammy had arrived at their Dad's office, Ian had saw something that changed his thoughts about everything he had already thought about.
Significance: The reason this passage is significant to this book is because Ian had explained how things might have been if his father had stayed with his mother. Ian thought it would be nice, but Ian had looked at Sammy and thought the total opposite. When I read this passage I could visualize the whole scene perfectly. It makes me sad, and I also think it shows another side of Ian that was never shown before.

Week 3
Page: 132 Paragraph: 11 - 15
Coach Schmidt was on the phone with Ian and said that he was a quiter and he knew she was right but he did not want to go back to that house, that town and that life.
Significance: The author wanted you to know that the life Ian and other people just like him had was a life that no one would want. He is a quiter, but that part does not matter to him. He did not want his parents to be split up, but the stupid decision that his mom made to do drugs. Now I know how hard it is for children with devorsed parents.

Page: 102 Paragraph: 1
One Sentence Summary: This is when a sherif stoped Ian and Sammy and the almost got sent to home, but Sammy broke his leg with a log.
Significants: This is important to the text because Sammy harrased a police officer which is illegal and they have to hide now or else the police will know where they are. I think that the author put this paragraph in the text because he wanted the reader to know that Ian and Sammy couldn't just turn themselves in but they had to run. Also I think he wanted to tell the reader that Sammy would do anything to get his family back.

Paragraph: 2nd Last. "I want her here....was why?"
One Sentence Summary: Ian knew his mom was a crack head but he didn't like it, and he didn't want to accept it. Everyman she was 'with' would either hit Ian and Sammy, or offer them crack; and their mom wouldn't do anything about it!
Significance: The significance of this reading is that it shows how their mom really is uncaring for her kids, by not caring if her boyfriend hit them, offer them crack, and never home to take care of them. It shows she doesn't care about them at all.

P:4
One Sentence Summary: Sammy and Ian had just ran away from a police officer, and when they finally stopped running, Ian noticed a look on Sammy's face that he had never seen before.
Significance: The significance of this passage was that Ian had finally noticed that they were both tired and exhausted. He knew there was something wrong with Sammy, but he couldn't fix it. Ian must have been feeling very solemn and sick of running.

Para 11
OSS: After Ian beat up Malachi, he told his mom that he could not go back home and that he and Sammy needed her. After thirty minutes, Ian thought that his mom was hopeless, and that he was an idiot for thinking she would come out.
Sig: In this passage, the authur wanted you to understand that Ians mom would not come out and help her own children. He wanted the reader to know that drugs can really mess you up, and that you should never do drugs. Expecially when you have children that still need you.

TS01 and TS36 I like the read-aloud passages your chose. In your significance, you need to comment on why the author chose to include this passage. What is the significance to the plot development? See April 15 entry. Also, zone in on a key paragraph rather than a page. We're looking for author's craft in this section. e.g. How do they make that scene so vivid?

TS28: Make sure you include a 1ss and significance to the passage (see top of page).

Pg. 74
P:2
One Sentence Summary: Ian and Sammy had gone to their mother's boyfriends house where they found her looking very sick.
Significance: The significance of this passage is that Ian is feeling for Sammy and his sadness. Sammy wanted to say goodbye, but they couldn't because the boyfriend wouldn't let them. Everything has to be hard for them it seems.

Para: 3
OSS: Ian slept in for school that night and the next morning and Ms. Veer wanted to talk to him. When they were talking, Ian was thinking about how Ms. Veers eyes always had that kindness in it, same with her smile, even when you are getting in trouble, but Ian kept back talking her.
Significance: The significance is that why would you want to be rude to someone who is always nice? Ms. Veer didn't want to make it so that Ian would have a hard time with the conversation, but Ian didn't care. He did not want to go to Kerner.

Paragraph: 4, 1
One sentence Summary: Ian bought a drink, food, and tuna and he was broke after buying these things for supper.
Significance: The significaance of this part is that it reminds me of the time I wanted to buy a drink, and an ice cream, but I couldn't because the drink caused 3 dollars, and i only had 2 dollars; so I couldn't buy the drink, and the ice cream, so i just bought the ice cream.
