The picture of this old man is significant because he had a huge part in this section. The reason he was so significant is because he gives Ian the courage to convince Sarge to quite his drinking habitand start over. Eduarrdoo (old man) did this by telling Ian how he got over the genocide that occurred in Guatemala, and a very touching story.

No Alcohol Beyond This Point by ifindkarma.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ifindkarma/187453730/

I chose this picture because in the book Sarge is trying to quit drinking. I think this picture is signifigant because it says no alcohol BEYOND this point, meaning he will not drink any alcohal beyond this point in time.

German Doll by gailf548.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/galfred/2811562091/

I chose this image of a doll, because it reminds me of how in the book Berta was talking to Ian and telling him a story of when she was 16. It included smashed dolls, it came to mind that I would chose a picture of a doll because specifically in the text it had said " My room was torn to pieces. Dolls that my grandmother had given me were smashed."

11g poker chips by Plutor.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/plutor/1818402449/

I chose an image of a blue chip. This image is significant because this is what Ian was given by Jack. It represents that Jack has been sober for two weeks, which is a great accomplishment, since according to Mac, everyday sober is a step in the right direction. Hopefully Jack continues to stay sober so he can move on with his life and start over.

Wisconsin Guard rolls out on a convoy training mission in preperation for another deployment to Iraq by The National Guard.

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/thenationalguard/4540463441/

I chose this image because in the book Shattered it talks about convoys. When Jack and Ian were walking to the soup kitchen, Jack wanted Ian to tell him about Rwanda so Ian told Jack, and they started to talk about convoys and how they work.

I chose this picture because it is a picture of the people in Rwanda.  I think this is a good picture because this whole chapter was about how Sarge was in Rwanda and that he was upset and said they tried there hardest.

This image is of a coat laying in an abandoned house. This image is important to the story because it shows one of the horrors Sarge saw in the war. When Sarge sees a coat just lying on the ground, he doesn't just see a coat. Sarge sees a dead body laying under that coat. He sees distressed children and women hiding from the war.

I chose an image of convoys carrying Rwandian refugees. This is significant because it reminds me of when Jack was explaining what he saw in Rwanda. He said that the government was racist and that the only way the peacekeeperrs could help victims would be by putting them in convoys to safety.

In the text Mac had been talking to Ian about how homeless people being able to go on and live a good life. He also stated that it was hard and would need a program like Detrex to help them over come their drinking problems. After Ian had heared this he had thought of trying to get Sarge to join up. This is important because if Sarge volunteers to make a change in his life this will be a huge roll in the story and make it more interesting.

Scared by Capture Queen ™.

This image is significant because the boy reminds me of two different events in this book. This image could represent how Jacob might have felt when the Hutus charged into his home, cut off his arm, and killed the rest of his family. This image could also represent how Ian must feel as hes reading Jacob's story, and I don't blame him. I sort of felt scared when I read Jacob's story myself. I wonder how Ian might react once he is through reading the story?

I chose this picture because in the book Shattered by Eric Walters, the author makes you think that the park is dead and there are homeless people everywhere and it's a scary place.  recently the author described that there are kids playing at the park on the swings and slides; Knowing that there are little kids on the slides in completely switches what i thought the park was like.  I thought the park would be a scary place with nobody there, but if there are little kids on swings it must not be such a scary place.

This image is significant because it kinda tells the story in one picture, and maybe even what the author is trying to say. What I think he is trying to say is that there are two worlds and we don't even acknowlegde that. We don't know it but in the book it is the homeless and the normal liveing life good group. The homeless are the darkside because they rome around in the dark and the "normal people" rome around in the light so they are the lights.

This image shows a fire just before it is going to go out. The fire's coals are starting to cool off, and the fire is burning out. This image is important to the story, because it shows a brief image of homelessness. When the coals were first put into the fire, the were burning with life; just like the homeless when they are first born. But after awhile the flames begin to die down a bit. Just like the homeless losing their job, or home. This image shows the fire at its last stage, before it burns out. The homeless are just like this fire. They never know when they are going to burn out, just like the coals.

For the old man, a congee by Haundreis.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/haundreis/2975014413/

For my picture I chose a picture of a homeless man sitting on his own with a girl giving him a bowl of soup.  I chose this picture because in the book there were three new girls working at the soup kitchen making the food.

Turnstudent19,

I think this image is important because this interview was a huge part of this book and Sarge who was being interview walked out. I think this is going to take roll in the next chapters because Sarge and Ian were actually pretty good friends, and I think Ian will try to talk to him again. I also think that it will be awhile till Sarge goes back to the club.

Book Club #3

URL: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickspacee/2668911974/student30

I chose an image of what I think the three old ladies who were helping out at "The Club" looked like. This image is significant because it is exactly the kind of people Mac hates, but that doesn't stop him from letting them help out. He would rather have people who don't care about the homeless (like Ian) than people who want to change the world, which I don't understand. I mean, who could hate a sweet old lady like the one shown above?!

In this image two men are talking to each other. The african american man could be like Sarge, and the other man could be Ian. This image related to Shattered becuase Ian talks to Sarge about, well, Sarge. He asks if he was in the war, what he did, where he was stationed. Sarge answered every question he asked. This image isn't exactly a homeless man and a boy talking, but it still "sets the scene" for this part of the story.

This image that I chose is important in the book because the second day Ian was at work , they fed the homeless people spaghetti at "The Club".

Turnstudent19,

This image is important because many people in not only the book but in the world are dealing with this and many dont even realize it. It is also important because this is the main idea in one picture which explains it all.

Ian goes to the soup kitchen early to help get ready. After unpacking some food from a truck him and Mac go into the kitchen. Ian sees a big pot with spaggetti in it. Mac tells him that he trys to get as much vegtables in the spagetti as possible.

This picture is significant because it shows a big pot if spaghetti just like that spaghetti that Mac was making.

This image shows homeless men standing in line at a soup kitchen for food. The significanceof this image is when Ian is in the soup kitchen. He notices that only homeless men had come to the soup kitchen. The homeless men stood in line waiting for Ian to serve them some stew. Just like in Shattered, these men are lineing up in soup kitchen for food.

I chose a picture of a park.  I chose this picture because it is a very dangerouse place at night.  I also chose this picture because if Sarge wasn't with Ian when Ian goes through the park Ian could get things taken from him again like his money, coat, and shoes.  The park is where Sarge ran out of to save Ian when the men in the leather jackets had his shoes and were going to get his coat which had all his money in it.

I chose this picture because it reminds me of when Ian was walking threw the dark park this homeless guy ran up to him and asked for some change, and Ian went to go pull out his wallet and the homeless guy yelled " DONT PULL THAT OUT" and Ian said why ? and the homeless guy said "because you don't know what kind of people are watching" and the homeless guy also saved him from a fight.

The reason I chose this image is so important is because the main character Ian is figuring out what he is in for. This is also good image because it leaves a question in my head and thats what good authors do. The question that was in my mind was who were these people that were huddling around.

There are several excellent pictures here, but also many missing. There's no TS# on the rugby picture. While an interesting picture, I think there are more effective ways of choosing an image to show Ian's confusion, such as a boy off on his own, away from the pack of friends.

Book Club #2:

I chose a picture of a man sleeping by a dumpster. I think this is significant because Ian is confused as to why anyone would want to sleep in a dumpster, but it is actually a very practical place for people with no homes to sleep.

I chose an image of homeless men that look like they could be waiting in line for something. This image is significant because this is how I picture the line-up out-side Mac's soup kitchen. Without that soup kitchen, many of the homeless people standing in line would grow even more hungry than they already were even with the soup kitchen.
